Welcome to the Team - Ed Santos
Welcome to the Indo Team - Ed Santos
After 4 years of pounding the pavement with a small crew, the Indosole team has grown a need for expansion in the personnel dept. 2013 has brought us some great new additions to our team: Stevie Farmer (Sales/Marketing) , Kenya Stabler (Designer), Jessica Medina (Web and Graphics Support), Morgan Sterns (Graphic Design), and Britt Erickson (Event Coordination).
While planning for the future of our sales and distribution model of our fine Indo products, we realized it was time for experienced leadership at an upper management level.
We are proud and honored to have added Ed Santos to our team. Ed will be managing Global Sales efforts going forward. Ed has years of experience selling, managing, and growing distribution for surf and lifestyle companies in the past, and has already made a dramatic impact on our sales strategy and organization in the short time with us.
This guy is gonna help us growww!

Batik
I have an immense passion for color and patterns of traditional textiles that originate from around the world, for me Bali is heaven. Indonesia is known for their Ikat and Batik textiles which happen to be some of my favorite, so without a doubt I wanted to incorporate these traditional textiles into our Spring/Summer 14' line. I decided to go with Batik because I felt we could have a lot of fun exploring and playing with designs and colors. So, we took our blank canvas (white organic cotton, which all our clothing will be made out of) and went to creativity city!
I will break down the process simply, but it really is something you have to see or do yourself to get the full understanding and appreciation for this technique. Batik is a wax resistent form of dying that takes 7-10 days to complete. First you choose your stamp pattern, we chose 1-2 traditional and then some other fun ones that we felt fit our image/story best, then you choose your colors for the motif and background. The first dying process is for the stamp, they dye the material, let it dry in the sun, then they lay the fabric out and dip the stamp in hot melted wax and stamp the whole material. Keep in mind the stamps are about 10' x 10' and usually hand carved metal squares and they do about 8 meters of fabric at a time, so its a lengthy and tedious process that is very hands on. Then they let the wax dry, dip it into a bath of solution to take out the first dye but the dye under the wax (the pattern) remains. Then, the background is dyed, left in the sun to dry( the sun gives the dye a unique "salted" effect) and after it is dried, the fabric is dipped into boiling hot water to remove the wax, which reveals the first dye job, then they rinse it all out and hang it out to dry again. Viola, then you have Batik! Too see more or get a better understanding please watch this video

Try a sample
These last few weeks have been dedicated to dialing in the samples for the girls clothing, bags and accessories. It is a tedious process that you feel like you take one step forward then one step back constantly... I'm finding out that what I draw out and envision in my head is only makes sense to me and that I wish I knew Indonesian. But once the design is nailed, I break it down to Kai (It helps to hear your ideas out loud, plus he translates it to the Tailors) then I have to factor in the what fabric to use and how that design will fit a complete stranger, then you can find me changing the design or being completely over it... I have already worked with 3 different Tailors, found a new one today and sent out some more samples, so hopefully by the end of this week we will have a set tailor and just keep making samples till we get it right! I had no idea it would be this difficult, but that feeling of when you receive a physical sample of something you have been staring at on paper or working up in your head is pretty awesome! Getting eager to have finished products especially since the clock is ticking, only one more month here...

BREAKS MAGAZINE INTERVIEW
BREAKS Magazine
--City Meets Sea--
Indosole's Kai Stober Paul was recently invited to sit down with the BREAKS Magazine crew and tell a bit about his special relationship with the country of Indonesia. Kai and his family have had a positive impact on the country and it's people through education and give-back programs. Kai's parents were teachers at the Jakarta International School for 20+ years. While educating Indonesia's local and ex-pat youth, they also provided a unique and shaping experience for Kai, with real-life education on the streets of Jakarta. Not many young red-head mulleted Americans can claim this kind of childhood experience. Kai's time in Indonesia has made him a very valuable asset to the Indosole team and we are thankful for his ability to shake and move with the locals in Bali and throughout Indonesia.

Kenya Dig Bali
Kenya here, reporting form Bali--Its only been a little over a week and already I have taken part in a yoga-a-thon, eaten delicious Mexican food twice (one thing I miss most when traveling), scootered to Ubud for yoga in the rain followed by a concert of Dustin Thomas and Medicine for the People at the Bali Spirit Festival, we have had batik hand dyed with our very own designs, found a home base, drank my weight in papaya juice and eaten dinner for under a dollar a couple of times and it was bomb.com... When I arrived, Kai and I instantly hit the road running at full force, getting me familiar with Indosole from a Bali perspective and working on gathering ideas and materials to bring you guys some rad new gear!
I would now say I am living the Bali way of life, scootering all day everyday, running out of minutes on my phone, and dealing with a way of life where nothing really goes as planned. I have also discovered that when my credits for electricity in my spot are low the machine beeps until you buy new ones -- learned this at 1 am the other night.. Despite the rough patches that come naturally when adjusting to a new country and environment, I feel at peace at the end of our long days, sitting a local warung(cafe) along the beach to catch the sunset, sip a fresh coconut, and meet some cool new people who always have come sort of tip or funny story we can relate to about living in Bali. At the end of the night you realize that Bali is a pretty amazing and unique place to be. Experiences like this give you a whole new perspective on your life back at "home" and make you realize how good we have it and how much we take advantage of it.. Yes, I miss San Francisco, mainly my two main squeezes, Beau and Deezle but there is such a creative and conscious vibe here that I never really feel lonely or that feeling of "I can't wait to get home"...
Shreeed and much love, KS

Soul Surf Project Bali
Soul Surf Project Bali
A couple weeks back, we were lucky enough to spend an afternoon with Soul Surf Project Bali, an organaziation that does great things for orphans in Bali. They take them surfing!
Here it is in their own words: "As soul surf project Bali we want equal chances for all children living on our planet. Children are the new generation! If we can give them knowledge about environmental care, they can give this knowledge to the world!
With surfing we have a method which is helping us to protect the coast and its environment! Surfing will be given as a reward for growing awareness and knowledge and a new attitude. While surfing, the kids are in the elements of mother nature, by being in those elements they will learn to appreciate it!"

Don't Go To Lombok
Don't Go To Lombok
The waves suck and the people are crazy.
Lombok is an island east of Bali that was recently visited by Indosole's crew and some friends.
Lacking the elegance and cultural aptitude of Bali, Lombok is not for the weak. No A.C. rooms, massages on the beach, or a plethora of restaurants and bars to choose from for night time fun.
No beautiful views of ocean side cliffs and islands in the distance. No hilltop lookouts over the jungle and ocean combined. No amazing boat adventures to find uncrowded and pumping beautiful waves.
No paved roads that make it easy to get around. No exposed surf spots that are easy to find and paddle out to. No safe ice to drink. And definitely no delicious coconuts.
So if you are looking for a beautiful surf or beach destination to go to next, definitely Do Not Go To Lombok. The waves suck and the people are crazy.
.....Meanwhile we'll be there suffering from the lack of amenities. Try not to worry about us, we will be ok.

Our buddy Heath, putting up with Lombok's lack of resources....
